Healthy wastewater system

Wastewater systems are designed to transport wastewater from residential, commercial and industrial areas. Most of us don't give a second thought to the pipes on our property, but we should.

A wastewater system can become overloaded or blocked for a number of reasons such as tree roots, fats, oils and foreign matter. This can lead to wastewater overflows that can be costly to clean up and cause environmental harm to our creeks and waterways.

Here are some suggestions for how you can protect your wastewater system:

  • Repair or replace cracked pipes.
  • Replace broken pipes.
  • Keep inspection points clear.
  • Don't connect stormwater to the wastewater system.
  • Keep maintenance holes clear.
  • Repair damaged or low-lying gullies.

For more information read the  wastewater fact sheet (72kb).
