Water advice to tenants

Water advice to tenantsTenants will receive consumption information in the form of a water advice summary which will be provided every six months for Gold Coast residents and quarterly for Logan and Redland residents.

The notice advises tenants of their average daily water use and details the city’s average household daily use for comparison. These notices are issued under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act 2008.

The water advice summary helps tenants manage their water consumption, monitor any water saving changes they make in the home, and alerts them to potential leaking toilets and taps, including yard taps. Residents renting should report any suspected leaks to their agent or property owner as soon as possible.

Water advice summary is not a bill

The water advice summary is for the tenant’s information only and is not a bill for payment. The bill for the property’s water use still goes to the property owner. Owners may pass on the full water consumption costs to tenants if the rental premises:

  1. are individually metered (or water is delivered by vehicle).
  2. have water efficiency devices installed.
  3. the tenancy agreement states the tenant must pay for water consumption.

Tenants and property owners/agents should become familiar with the location of the water meter and note the reading at the start and end of the tenancy on the entry/exit condition reports.

For further information on a property owner’s ability to pass on water costs to tenants, visit the Residential Tenancies Association website.
