Water meters - frequently asked questions

Where is my water meter?

All new residential subdivisions are required to have their water meter located about 500mm from the left or right-hand side boundary and about 200 to 500mm back from the front boundary. If you are unable to locate your water meter, contact Allconnex Water on 1300 000 WATER (1300 000 928) or info@allconnex.com.au.

Who owns the water meter?

Allconnex Water owns the water meter, but it is the responsibility of the property owner to ensure that it is accessible for reading.

How do I read my water meter?

By reading your meter you can keep track of the amount of water being used by members of your household.

There are two types of standard residential water meters. Some have five black digits and three white digits. Some older meters have four black digits and four white digits. Both are read in the same way.

In most cases this will be as easy as locating your meter, then locating the display of numbers. The black numbers on your water meter represent kilolitres (one kilolitre (kl) is 1000 litres). The white numbers read litres. Only the black numbers are read to calculate your water charge.

What about access to my water meter?

To enable Allconnex Water to obtain accurate readings, the area around your water meter needs to be kept clear. If you have a dog, please ensure the dog is restrained during water meter reading times. We only need a few moments each year to read your water meter. Contact Allconnex Water on 1300 000 WATER (1300 000 928) or info@allconnex.com.au to find out when we will be reading water meters in your district.

If our reader cannot read your meter, due to locked gates etc, a card will be left in your letterbox.

This is a reply paid card for you to write the reading and the date in the boxes provided, then return it to us by post, email, telephone or fax.

How do I check for leaks?

You can perform an overnight test to check for leaks:

  • Last thing at night turn off all household and garden taps.
  • Read your water meter and record both black and white numbers.
  • Avoid using any water overnight, such as flushing the toilet.

Read your meter first thing in the morning, noting all numbers. If any of the numbers have moved overnight and you have not used any water, this indicates you may have a leak on your property. You should call your plumber to identify and fix the potential leak.

Can I move the water meter?

No. The meter may be moved, however the work must only be carried out by Allconnex Water. You can make an application for the meter to be moved by calling 1300 000 928.

It is an offence under the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability Act) 2008 to interfere with service provider’s infrastructure.

Why don’t you fix anything on the house side of the meter?

Allconnex Water is responsible for the supply of quality drinking water to the water meter only.

What are my options if I think my water meter is not recording correctly?

If you believe you have a leak in your house you should call your plumber to identify and fix any potential leaks.

You should contact Allconnex Water if you believe your water meter is not working properly and an officer will be sent to investigate. If it is determined your water meter is not functioning correctly, a replacement will be installed.
