What is Trade Waste?
Trade waste is liquid waste generated by a business (commercial and industrial) other than domestic wastewater, discharged to the wastewater reticulation system.
Do I produce Trade Waste?
Many commercial and industrial businesses produce trade waste. Common examples include hairdressers, small bakeries, takeaway food outlets and restaurants, child care centres, laundries and laundromats, car wash businesses, hospitals, butchers, clubs and hotels.
Why do I pay for Trade Waste disposal?
Allconnex Water provides a wastewater system primarily for transporting and treating domestic wastewater. Payment for this service is collected through wastewater charges on each rateable property. This system may also be used for the acceptance and treatment of trade waste. As trade waste imposes an additional load on the wastewater system, trade waste charges apply, based on the “user pays” premise.
Who pays for the permit and disposal of Trade Waste?
The owner of the premises or the person who uses the disposal facilities is responsible for paying the fees.
How and where do I get a permit?
If your work produces a liquid waste, you should have a permit. The conditions of the permit will enable you to dispose of the liquid waste safely.
An application must be made to Allconnex Water.
Trade Waste Approval (121kb) can be lodged at either of our Redland District Customer Service Centres. There are no fees or charges to submit this application.
Are you allowed to remove or dispose of waste yourself?
No. This industry requires specialist training and is licensed by the Environmental Protection Authority. Always contact a trade waste licensed company. Remember to use legally licensed companies and retain all documentation the contractor gives you.
How do I clean the grease trap/interceptor?
Make sure you use detergents that quickly break down.
The trap/interceptor must be pumped out as directed by Allconnex Water. Allconnex Water will advise if it needs to be cleaned more or less frequently.
Generally, if the grease is more than 50mm thick in the first chamber of the interceptor or if there is over 15mm of oil or grease in the last chamber, it needs to be cleaned.
Guide to Trade Waste Pre-treatment (466kb).
Guidelines for sizing grease arrestors follow capacity allowances for various fixtures and fittings in commercial premises.
Also refer to Standard Plumbing and Drainage Regulation 2003 (Part 5, Division 3 - Arrestors, Section 39 - Requirements for grease arrestors, (1) (d) minimum size requirements).
