Reticulation system rules and conditions

The rules and conditions and general information for applying a metered standpipe to Allconnex Water's reticulation system are provided below:

Reticulated water system

  1. All domestic water carriers must use dedicated filling stations only.
  2. Sub developments and work sites must use the closest hydrant to the site that does not interfere with any traffic, pedestrians or residence.
  3. Other users must only connect to the reticulated water system where it will not interfere with any traffic, pedestrians or residence.
  4. Standpipes that are left in the reticulated water system unattended must have appropriate signage and safety barriers.

Hydrant filling points

  1. Hydrant points are approximately 80 metres apart and most are marked with H on the road or kerbside.
  2. The hydrant has two lugs facing opposite directions.
  3. The meter box lid is sprayed yellow and embossed with H.
  4. Users should lift the lid and clean any dirt or matter from around the lugs and mushroom hydrant outlet, and remove the small cover from mushroom if applicable.
  5. The hydrant outlet is now ready for the standpipe to be attached to the reticulated water system for use.

Applying a metered standpipe to Allconnex Water’s reticulation system

  1. Looking from top to bottom, the standpipe consists of: handle and spindle, storz coupling and swivel head outlet, digital flow meter, standpipe handles, barrel assembly, brass lugs and base nut, polyurethane base nut washer, mushroom washer and bolt kit (strainer plate in low flow models only).
  2. Before fastening the standpipe to the hydrant, wind the spindle up (anti-clockwise) as far as you can. Check that the base nut sealing washer is fitted, and screw the base nut lugs right down (clockwise). You are now ready to attach the standpipe to the hydrant.
  3. Place the standpipe base nut and lugs down onto the hydrant. Engage the standpipe lugs under the hydrant lugs then, holding the standpipe by both handles, turn the standpipe (clockwise) until firmly fastened. Do not over tighten, and under no circumstances use any extension pipes on the standpipe handles or other tools to engage or disengage the standpipe onto the hydrant.
  4. If required, attach hoses to the standpipe before turning it on, and then turn the spindle (clockwise) until water starts to flow. Do not wind the spindle all the way down as this could result in the standpipe not shutting down properly [about 30 mm down provides maximum flow].
  5. When finished, turn the spindle (anti-clockwise) until the water flow ceases, and if any devices are fastened to the standpipe outlet release the pressure first before disengaging the standpipe. This is the reverse procedure to paragraph 2 above.
  6. Turn entire standpipe (anti-clockwise) until lugs become loose and the standpipe can be lifted out.
  7. Make sure to replace the hydrant lid on box before leaving.

Standpipe digital meter reading

Standpipe meter

The correct way to read a digital meter is:

  • Face the meter casing towards you.
  • Read numbers left to right.
  • Do not include the last two numbers after the decimal point in the reading. For example, the actual meter reading shown to the right is 001178.11. The correct reading is 001178.

Metered standpipe trouble shooting

Problem:Cannot put standpipe lugs under hydrant lugs.
Solution: Ensure that the spindle is screwed right up (anti-clockwise) and the hydrant lugs are screwed right down (clockwise).

Problem: Water is leaking from around the standpipe base nut.
Solution: Tighten the standpipe down a bit more on the seal or check that the poly sealing washer is in place and not damaged or worn.

Problem: Water is leaking from around the storz coupling swivel head outlet.
Solution: Check that the storz coupling rubber sealing washer is not missing.

Problem: Water flow is restricted dramatically.
Solution: Check that the holes in base nut strainer plate are not clogged up (low flow standpipes only).

Problem: Cannot stop water flowing from the standpipe.
Solution: Wind the spindle handle fully down and then up quickly. If this is not effective, tap the spindle handle centre sharply and firmly. If this still does not prove effective, call Allconnex Water on 1300 000 WATER (1300 000 928) for further advice.
