The Queensland Water Commission has released new guidelines on the irrigation of playing surfaces used for sport and recreation activities.
The guidelines promote the efficient use of water on these active playing surfaces and assist sporting clubs, schools and child care centres to meet current water restriction obligations.
They enable the watering of grounds so that they are in a safe and usable condition for sport and recreation activities. The guidelines recognise the importance of sport and recreation in our community and seek to minimise the disruption to sporting activities.
Who needs to apply?
Active playing surfaces have been categorised into five categories. Different requirements apply to each category of surface. The categories include:
Major sports played on turf surfaces
International, national or state competitions or those used for regional or district competitions, such as Metricon Stadium and the Logan Metro Sports Park Precinct.
Local sports played on turf surfaces
Senior, junior, amateur and other ‘grades’ of sporting competitions.
Non-turf and other sports
Surfaces which use water for safety or other reasons such as dust suppression or track maintenance. The preparation and maintenance of turf cricket wickets and the irrigation of golf greens and tees, lawn bowls rinks, and croquet courts.
Schools
Schools using town water for irrigation of sporting fields and ovals.
Child care centres
Child care centres using town water for irrigation of grassed soft fall surfaces.
