Liquid wastes produced by industry, small businesses and commercial enterprises are referred to as trade waste. Liquid trade waste means all liquid waste other than domestic wastewater.

Do I produce trade waste?

Many commercial and industrial businesses, from small bakeries to metal finishing industries, produce trade waste. Common trade wastes include wash and rinse waters and runoff from cooling and process procedures. Refer to page four of  A guide to wastewater (236kb) for more details about different types of trade waste.

Why worry about trade waste?

Proper trade waste management assists Allconnex Water to protect the environment and its waterways. Every individual and business together with Allconnex Water should take steps to protect our waterways from pollution. Proper management also limits damage to our wastewater systems and protects the publics’ health.

What are my legal responsibilities?

Discharging waste to Allconnex Water’s wastewater system without approval is illegal and can incur penalties. If your business generates trade waste and discharges it to Allconnex Water’s wastewater system, it is your responsibility to ensure that you have permission from the owner of the property or agent and have a current  Trade Waste Approval (121kb).

My grease trap

WasteLink is an electronic monitoring and management system. It monitors the removal and disposal of waste from grease arrestors and other pre-treatment devices and holding tanks, significantly reducing the pollutants entering our wastewater distribution system. The trade waste approval holder is responsible for cleaning the grease arrestors at the frequency prescribed by Allconnex Water and for all associated costs.

It is important that grease arrestors are serviced at the frequency specified in the conditions of the Trade Waste Approval. Failure to comply with these conditions will affect your approval status.

Guidelines for sizing grease arrestors follow capacity allowances for various fixtures and fittings in commercial premises.

Also refer to Standard Plumbing and Drainage Regulation 2003 (Part 5, Division 3 - Arrestors, Section 39 - Requirements for grease arrestors, (1) (d) minimum size requirements).
